We’re super excited to announce that Phaedra Darwish has generously decided to share a series of 6 videos where she teaches her complete choreography to Zay el Hawa! The videos are available to individual and professional members through the INBC Learning Center. The dance level is high intermediate to advanced.
Many of us have fond memories of learning from, dancing with, and being inspired by Phaedra as she was the headliner for our 2023 Summer’s End belly dance event held in Evansville, Indiana. Phaedra has continued to be a great friend to INBC, providing performance opportunities for many of our members and helping to publicize our events in the Chicago area.
Phaedra has been performing and teaching workshops and classes in Chicago and throughout the US for many years, as well as producing and taking part in cultural events, community fundraisers, and dance festivals as both a musician and dancer. Through active engagement, maintaining a high standard of execution, and participation in quality programming, Phaedra hopes to spread enthusiasm and respect for Middle Eastern dance as more and more people get acquainted with its health benefits and enchanted by its beauty.

The song Phaedra has chosen, Zay el Hawa (“like the wind”), is a fantastic piece of music popularized by the iconic Egyptian singer and movie star Abdel Halim Hafez in 1970. The music is composed by Baligh Hamdi with lyrics by Mohamed Hamza. Note that Baligh Hamdi also composed the music to one of the most popular belly dance pieces ever: Alf Layla Wa Layla! You can listen to Abdel Halim Hafez performing the song live here.
